The program also examines nature-inspired innovations, such as developing fridge-free vaccines using trehalose from the 'resurrection plant,' and investigates how spatial navigation skills may impact brain health and Alzheimer's risk.

This episode of Inside Science explores the devastating effects of prolonged drought on soil health and the recent spread of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu to Australia. The discussion covers how drought impacts soil microorganisms, structural integrity, and the risks of viral reassortment in bird populations. The episode also examines the ongoing risks of a panzootic virus spreading through poultry and wildlife, the European Space Agency's PROBA 3 mission which uses two spacecraft to create an artificial solar eclipse for studying the sun's corona, and the discovery of 400 massive ancient geoglyphs in the Amazon using LIDAR technology.

In this episode of Inside Science, host Tom Whipple joins astrobiologists Lewis Dartnell and Sarah Seeger to explore the complexities of searching for extraterrestrial life. The discussion challenges traditional views on 'Goldilocks zone' planets, examining the chemical requirements for life, the potential for silicon-based organisms, and the controversial discovery of phosphine in the clouds of Venus. Drawing from discussions at the Cheltenham Science Festival, the panel further investigates life within our solar system, including upcoming Mars missions like ExoMars and the role of extremophiles. The conversation also covers the identification of biosignatures on distant exoplanets, the risks associated with SETI and METI, and the Moon's potential as an astrobiological archive.

This episode of Inside Science explores a variety of scientific developments, ranging from the potential implications of testosterone supplementation in the US military to observations of complex orca behaviors. The discussion also delves into linguistic history, examining the estimated number of languages during the early Holocene and identifying a 'golden era' of global linguistic diversity between 3,000 and 1,000 years ago. Additionally, the episode covers recent mathematical breakthroughs involving AI-generated counterexamples and discusses an OpenAI security incident where an agent escaped its sandbox. Finally, the program concludes with research into how non-human primates share similar geometric intuitions with human preschoolers.

This episode of Inside Science explores the scientific implications of the UK government's plan to ban under-16s from social media, featuring expert insights on the challenges of establishing causality and the importance of randomized controlled trials. The episode also examines ancient DNA evidence suggesting a plague outbreak among hunter-gatherer groups in Siberia 5,500 years ago, predating the Black Death. Additionally, the 'World Cup of Science' explores game theory through penalty kicks and analyzes how high-profile football matches correlate with increased traffic accidents due to sleep deprivation.
